Overview & Specifications
What Is a Paper Tote Bag?
A paper tote bag is a handled shopping bag whose gusseted geometry opens into a box-like shape that stands on its own; side and/or base gussets are set per project. Top-edge construction and handle attachment are developed around the selected handle and load. The gussets give the bag its volume; the handles give it the carrying function.
How a Paper Tote Bag Works
The format works through three production details.
01
Gussets and Base
The gussets, set as side and/or base geometry per project, fold in while the bag ships flat and open out to give the bag depth and a base it can stand on.
02
Top Edge and Handles
Top-edge construction and handle attachment are developed around the selected handle and load, so the carrying force is taken into the bag body.
03
Optional Base Insert
A paperboard bottom insert can sit in the base to keep it flat and stable under boxed or heavier contents.
Anatomy of a Paper Tote Bag
01
Front and Back Panels
Main print surfaces.
02
Gussets
Side and/or base, per project; fold flat, open out for depth.
03
Base
Formed by the gusset geometry so the bag stands.
04
Top Edge / Handle Attachment Area
Where the handles join the bag, built for the selected handle and load.
05
Handles
Twisted paper, rope, die-cut or ribbon.
06
Base Insert
Optional paperboard card in the base.
The gussets fold in when the bag ships flat, so the dieline marks the folds; logos usually sit on the front and back panels, with the gussets for secondary graphics.

Application guide
When Is a Paper Tote Bag the Right Choice?
A paper tote bag suits retail purchases carried by hand: boutique and fashion retail, fragrance, candle and jewelry purchases, gift and promotional programs, and food or takeaway orders packed in suitable materials, wherever the bag carries boxed, folded or multi-item contents.
01
Built-In
Built-In Carrying
Handles let customers carry purchases without a separate secondary bag.02
Volume
Volume for Boxed Products
The gusseted format holds cartons, folded apparel, gift sets and several smaller items more effectively than a flat bag.03
Retail
Retail Brand Visibility
Large front and back panels stay visible after purchase, so the carry bag works as a moving brand surface.04
Alternative
When Another Format May Fit Better
For thin, lightweight items that do not need handles, a Flat Paper Bag stores and packs flat. For a carry carton with a built-in handle, see Gable Boxes.

What Size Paper Tote Bag Do You Need?
Quote by width × gusset × height. Width is the face of the bag, gusset is its depth when open, and height runs from the base to the top edge, not including the handles.
There is no fixed size list: any practical size is built to order, across the full paper range below.
How Product Size Becomes Bag Size
The figures below are planning references, not fixed manufacturing rules; final allowances depend on the contents, paper and handle style.
| Step | Typical Allowance |
|---|---|
| Product width to bag width | Add about 10–20 mm (1/2–3/4 in) for easy loading |
| Product depth to gusset | Gusset at least the product's depth |
| Product height to bag height | Add about 30–50 mm so contents sit below the top edge |
| Several items or a box | Size to the packed arrangement, not one item |
Paper Weight Reference
| Paper | Typical Weight | Typically Suited To |
|---|---|---|
| Standard kraft | About 100–120 gsm | Everyday retail and takeaway |
| Heavy-duty kraft | About 130–150 gsm | Boxed purchases and heavier loads |
| White art paper | About 157–210 gsm | Printed boutique and gift bags |
| Art paper with lamination and base insert | About 210–250 gsm | Fragrance, jewelry and presentation bags |
Important: These are reference figures. Carrying performance depends on the paper grade, bag dimensions, handle material, attachment method and packed weight working together, so no weight rating is published without testing the finished bag.
If you are unsure, share the product dimensions and packed weight with the quote request, and the bag is sized around them.
Is There One Standard Weight Capacity?
No. Carrying capacity depends on the paper, handle style, attachment method, dimensions and packed load together. A pre-production sample loaded with your actual products is the reliable check.
