Overview & Specifications
What Are Book Style Boxes?
Book style boxes are rigid boxes whose attached cover opens from one side, the way a hardcover book opens, instead of lifting from the front. They are built on the Flip Top Rigid Box structure with the spine moved to the side. The format is chosen for the opening sequence: cover first, then inside-cover message, then contents.
They are part of the Rigid Boxes range.
How a Book Style Box Opens
The spine runs along one side, so the cover swings open sideways beside the base; the opening angle depends on the construction. The first thing seen is the inside cover, a full printable panel, with the contents arranged in the base next to it. Where a closure is wanted, a magnetic, friction fit or other approved detail on the opening edge holds the cover shut; it is optional and set per project.

Spine
along one side; the spine construction itself is the flip top's paper-wrapped spine.
02
Inside cover
the first panel seen, used for a story, instructions or a pocket.
03
Base
holds the insert, laid out in the order the contents should be discovered.
04
Closure (optional)
magnetic, friction fit or another approved detail on the opening edge, chosen per project.
What it has to do
What a Book Style Reveal Has to Do
A book style box has to tell a story before the product appears, use the inside cover as a page, lay out contents in reading order and keep the cover closed until opened. Each need below is matched to how the build meets it.
01
Tell
Tell a Story Before the Product
The opening motion creates a narrative, presentation-led experience that feels different from lift-off lids and front-flap flip tops, because the message comes before the contents.02
Use
Use the Inside Cover as a Page
The inside cover can carry artwork, campaign messaging, instructions or a compatible pocket for cards and certificates.03
Lay
Lay Out Contents in Reading Order
Inserts and compartments in the base organize the contents according to the order in which they should be discovered, left to right like a page.04
Keep
Keep the Cover Closed
A closure is optional. Where one is wanted, a magnetic closure gives a defined snap shut on the opening edge, and a friction fit suits a simpler build. See Magnetic Closure Gift Boxes for magnet options.05
Read
Read as a Book on a Shelf
The spine is part of the wrapped exterior, so artwork, a title or a logo can run across it, which suits collector editions and boxes displayed after opening.
Which Rigid Structure Fits Your Book Style Box?
Book style boxes are built on one rigid structure: the flip top, with its spine set along the side. If the lid should lift from the front instead, the same structure is used in its classic orientation.
| Structure | Orientation | Decision Factor |
|---|---|---|
| Flip Top Rigid Box | Spine on one side; cover opens like a hardcover | Story-led reveal with an inside-cover page |
| Flip Top Rigid Box (classic) | Spine at the back; lid lifts from the front | Inside-lid message seen upright |
Book Style vs Flip Top vs Two Piece Boxes
Book style boxes open from the side and show the inside cover beside the contents. A classic flip top lifts from the front, so the inside lid stands upright behind the product. A two piece box has no attached lid at all; the lid lifts fully off.
| Attribute | Book Style | Classic Flip Top | Two Piece |
|---|---|---|---|
| Opens from | One side | Front | Lid lifts off |
| Lid attached | Yes | Yes | No |
| First panel seen | Inside cover, beside contents | Inside lid, upright behind contents | Lid underside, set aside |
| Best fit | PR kits, collector editions, story-led sets | Gift sets, kits, accessories | Full-access gift and retail boxes |

What Size Book Style Box Do I Need?
Size the base from the contents and insert, then let the cover match the base footprint plus spine and closure clearance. Book style boxes use the same allowances as other flip top builds; the side spine changes the dieline, not the interior math.
| Step | Typical Allowance |
|---|---|
| Product to base interior (no insert) | Add about 2–3 mm to length and width, 2–5 mm to height |
| Base interior to base exterior, 1.5 mm board | About +4–5 mm per dimension |
| Base interior to base exterior, 2.0 mm board | About +5–6 mm per dimension |
| Cover | Sized to the base exterior plus side-spine and closure clearance on the dieline |
Important: Treat these numbers as reference values. A rigid box is typically held to about ±1–2 mm, and wrap moisture can shift fit slightly, so spine movement and cover alignment are checked on a sample. Full sizing is on the Flip Top Rigid Box page.
