Overview & Specifications
What Are Magnetic Closure Gift Boxes?
Magnetic closure gift boxes are rigid presentation boxes with an attached lid that is pulled shut by magnets hidden under the wrap. The magnet defines how the box closes, not how it is built: the box itself is a Flip Top Rigid Box or a Collapsible Rigid Box, with magnets placed in the lid front and base front.
They are part of the Rigid Boxes range.
How a Magnetic Closure Holds the Lid
Magnets are set into the lid's front flap and into the base front, aligned so they meet as the lid comes down. Their pull holds the lid closed until it is lifted. How firmly the lid stays shut depends on magnet size, count, placement, board thickness and wrap, so the closing force is set per build and checked on a sample.
01
Placement
paired magnets sit under the wrap in the lid flap and the base front, so nothing shows on the outside.
02
Alignment
each pair must meet squarely; a small offset weakens the pull and can pull the lid off line.
03
Pull
board and wrap sit between the magnets, so thicker builds need a stronger magnet or closer spacing for the same closing feel.
04
What changes the closing feel
magnet size and count, spacing and polarity, the board and wrap between the magnets, front-flap overlap, box dimensions, the product and insert load, and production tolerance. The closure gives presentation reclosure only; it is not tamper evident, child resistant or a parcel-shipping closure.
What it has to do
What a Magnetic Closure Has to Do
A magnetic closure has to keep the lid shut without tape or ribbon, support repeated opening and reclosing, stay invisible on the outside and work with the insert and lid geometry. Each need below is matched to how the build meets it.
01
Keep
Keep the Lid Shut Without Tape or Ribbon
The magnet pull holds the lid down on its own, so the box closes cleanly at retail, in a gift exchange or on a desk without a seal or tie to cut.02
Open
Open and Close Many Times
Gift and presentation boxes are often reopened. The magnets give a repeatable closing action, which suits boxes kept for storage, such as accessory, jewelry and kit packaging.03
Stay
Stay Hidden on the Exterior
Magnets are concealed within the construction, so the outer wrap stays continuous and the closure does not interrupt the design.04
Work
Work With the Insert and Lid Geometry
The lid depth, front panel, magnets and insert are planned together. If the insert pushes the product too high, or the lid flap is too shallow, the magnets cannot meet and the lid will not sit flat.05
Store
Store Flat Before Packing, Where Needed
Brands with limited storage can use a collapsible build that ships flat and is set up before packing, with the magnetic closure working once the box is assembled.
Which Rigid Structure Fits Your Magnetic Gift Box?
Magnetic closures are built on two rigid structures. Choose Flip Top when the box should arrive set up and ready to pack, and Collapsible when the boxes need to ship and store flat before assembly.
| Structure | How It Arrives | Best for With Magnets | Decision Factor |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flip Top Rigid Box | Set up, ready to pack | Gift sets, kits and retail boxes | No assembly step; full box volume in storage |
| Collapsible Rigid Box | Flat, assembled before packing | Large or rolling gift programs | Lower storage volume; adds a setup step |
Set-Up vs Collapsible Magnetic Gift Boxes
Set-up magnetic boxes arrive finished and go straight to packing; collapsible magnetic boxes arrive flat and take less space in freight and storage, but each box is raised and secured before the product goes in. Both use the same concealed-magnet closing principle once the box is closed.
| Attribute | Set-Up (Flip Top) | Collapsible |
|---|---|---|
| Arrives | Set up | Flat |
| Storage volume before use | Full box volume | Lower; savings depend on box size and case packing |
| Setup before packing | None | Raise walls and secure |
| Assembly method | Not applicable | Corner lock, adhesive assembly or magnetic elements |
| Best fit | Ready-to-pack gift boxes | Programs with limited storage or seasonal peaks |
A collapsible build changes the packing workflow, so it is sampled assembled and loaded with the product before production approval.

What Size Magnetic Closure Gift Box Do I Need?
Size the box from the product outward, then add room for the insert, board and lid flap so the magnets can meet. The interior holds the product with clearance, and the lid flap must be deep enough to carry the magnets and close flush against the base front.
| Step | Typical Allowance |
|---|---|
| Product to base interior (no insert) | Add about 2–3 mm to length and width, 2–5 mm to height |
| Base interior to base exterior, 1.5 mm board | About +4–5 mm per dimension |
| Base interior to base exterior, 2.0 mm board | About +5–6 mm per dimension |
| Lid flap | Deep enough to hold the magnets and meet the base front squarely |
| Magnets | Size, count and placement set around the lid and product load, confirmed on a sample |
Start from the product's length, width and height, the number of items in the box, the insert material and thickness, the lid and front-flap geometry, and whether the box is set up or collapsible. Develop the insert before locking the outer size, because insert walls and clearance change the finished dimensions.
Important: Treat these numbers as reference values. A rigid box is typically held to about ±1–2 mm, and wrap moisture can shift fit slightly, so magnet pull and lid alignment are checked together on a sample. Full flip top sizing is on the Flip Top Rigid Box page, and flat-pack sizing on the Collapsible Rigid Box page.
