Overview & Specifications
What Are Compostable Stand Up Pouches?
Compostable stand up pouches are stand up pouches built from a compostable construction instead of PET, foil or metallized film: here, kraft paper with a PLA-based layer. Whether a finished pouch can be called compostable depends on every component, including inks, adhesives, zipper and any window, and on the certification held for that pouch.
Compostable Stand Up Pouches sit in the Sustainable Packaging range and use the Stand Up Pouch structure.
What it has to do
What a Compostable Pouch Claim Needs
A compostable pouch claim needs a certified finished pouch, compatible components, a named disposal route and a shelf life that suits the product. Each need below is matched to how it is met.
01
Certified
A Certified Finished Pouch
Certification for the finished pouch is arranged per order to an agreed standard, subject to supplier confirmation, such as EN 13432 or ASTM D6400; unusual requirements are confirmed before quoting.02
Compatible
Compatible Components
Inks, adhesives, zipper and any window are part of the finished pouch. Each option is confirmed against the certification for the construction.03
Named
A Named Disposal Route
For industrially compostable specifications, check that a local facility accepts this pouch. Facilities may be unavailable in your area.04
Shelf
Shelf Life That Suits the Product
Shelf life depends on the full construction, seal and product, and is confirmed for the required shelf life. Kraft and PLA-based constructions are chosen for products whose barrier needs they can meet.
Compostable vs Standard Stand Up Pouches
Choose a compostable pouch when a certified compostability claim is part of the brief, and a standard laminate when barrier performance comes first. The table compares the two.
| Attribute | Compostable Stand Up Pouch | Standard Stand Up Pouch |
|---|---|---|
| Material | Kraft paper with PLA-based layer | PET, metallized PET, foil or kraft laminates |
| Barrier | Confirmed for the required shelf life | Wide range, including foil |
| Claim | Certified per order for the finished pouch | None implied |
| Disposal | Certified composting route | Per construction |
| Starting price | From $1.25 / unit | From $0.55 / unit |

How Do You Specify a Compostable Pouch?
Start from the product and its shelf life, then the certification and disposal route, then the size and options. The final construction and certificate are confirmed before artwork.
| Measurement | What to Record |
|---|---|
| Product | Contents and fill weight |
| Shelf life | Required time and storage |
| Certification | Standard and route needed |
| Size and options | W × H × gusset; zipper, window |
Check a Filled Sample
Fill a sample with the product and close it as in use. Check the stand, the seal and the print on kraft.
What to Check Before Bulk Production
Review a filled sample and the certificate for the finished pouch before approval. Record the approved construction, certification and claim wording on the signed-off sample.
| If the sample shows | Review before approval |
|---|---|
| Pouch does not stand | Review gusset and fill on another sample |
| Claim wording broader than the certificate | Narrow the wording to the certificate |
| Option not covered by the certificate | Remove or change the option |
| Shelf life too short | Review construction for the product |
Seven days covers standard production from approved proof once the specification is confirmed. Certification sourcing or testing happens before the 7-day production period, on a separately confirmed timeline. Delivery timing is confirmed separately.
