Overview & Specifications

What Is a Stand Up Pouch?

A stand up pouch is a flexible pouch made from a front panel, a back panel and a folded bottom gusset. The gusset lies flat while the pouch is empty and opens as product is filled, forming a base that lets the pouch stand upright. Compared with a Flat Bottom Bag, it uses a simpler construction with two main printed faces.

How the Bottom Gusset Works

The bottom gusset is what turns a flat pouch into a standing one.

01

Flat When Empty

The gusset is folded inward between the front and back panels, so empty pouches stack flat for storage and shipping.

02

Opens When Filled

As product settles to the bottom, the gusset spreads open and forms an oval or rounded base that supports the pouch upright.

03

Fill Determines Stance

How well the pouch stands depends on gusset depth, product weight and density, fill level and film stiffness. A pouch that is too narrow, too shallow, underfilled or built with an unsuitable laminate may not stand as intended even when the gusset itself is correctly formed.

Filled stand up pouch standing upright with the gusset fully opened to support the pouch.

Anatomy of a Stand Up Pouch

A stand up pouch is built around two primary faces, a folding bottom gusset and a top filling and closure zone.

Artwork note

Keep important copy, logos and barcodes clear of side seals, bottom gusset folds, zipper areas and the final seal zone.

Bottom Gusset Styles

Common bottom gusset styles include the three below, selected around fill weight and presentation.

Style How It Is Built Typically Suited To
Round bottom (Doyen) A curved U-shaped seal across the gusset, which acts as feet for the pouch Lighter fills, commonly around 1 lb or less
K-seal bottom Angled seals at the two bottom corners Medium to heavier fills, commonly around 1 to 5 lb, with more base stability
Plow (folded) bottom A W-folded gusset with no seal across the base, so the product sits on the base panel Dense or heavier fills such as flour, rice, grains and seeds

These weight ranges are guidelines rather than fixed limits; the style is confirmed on the dieline with the pouch dimensions.

Application guide

When Is a Stand Up Pouch the Right Choice?

A stand up pouch works well when a product needs upright shelf display, a resealable format and an efficient flexible structure across a wide range of sizes, such as snacks, coffee, tea, powders and pet treats.

  • 01

    Shelf

    Upright Front-Facing Display

Once filled, the pouch stands on its gusset and presents one large front panel to the shopper, giving branding and product information a clear position on shelf.
  • 02

    Range

    Broad Product and Size Range

The same structure can be sized from small sample-style pouches to multi-pound packs, so one pouch format can cover several product lines and sizes in a range.
  • 03

    Build

    Efficient Construction

A stand up pouch uses a simpler build than a Flat Bottom Bag while still standing on shelf, which makes it a practical middle ground between flat pouches and more structured formats. Final pricing depends on the selected specifications.
  • 04

    Alternative

When Another Format May Fit Better

If side-panel artwork or a squared, box-like footprint matters, a Flat Bottom Bag may suit better. For liquids, sauces or purees that need pouring, a Spout Pouch is the more practical format, and a Back Seal Bag may fit when production is built around a rear-seamed pillow pack.
Customization

Customize Your Stand Up Pouches

Stand up pouches can be configured around the product, the filling process, barrier requirements and retail presentation. Dimensions, gusset style, film structure, closures, printing and finishes are selected together for the finished pouch.

01

Dimensions and Gusset Depth

Width, height and bottom gusset depth are developed around fill volume, product weight and desired shelf proportions. Gusset depth controls both capacity and how firmly the filled pouch stands, while width and height set the front-panel area for branding and product information.

Seal areas, zipper placement and filling clearance are kept inside the usable dimensions. Reference starting sizes and fill weights by product are listed in the size guide.

02

Film and Barrier Structure

Choose from PET Film, Clear PET Film, Metallized PET Film, Holographic PET Film and Kraft Paper Laminate. The laminate is selected around what the product needs protection from, including moisture, oxygen, aroma, light, grease and handling.

Product Main Protection Considerations Typical Direction
Snacks, trail mix and dried fruit Moisture, oxygen and aroma Typically metallized PET; clear PET or a window where product visibility matters
Jerky and fatty snacks Oxygen, grease and puncture Typically metallized PET or interior aluminum foil, with a sealant selected around fat content
Ground coffee and loose-leaf tea Aroma, oxygen, moisture and light Typically metallized PET or interior aluminum foil; valve through the coffee configuration where degassing is required
Powders and drink mixes Moisture, oxygen and seal integrity Typically interior aluminum foil or another high-barrier laminate
Candy Moisture and product visibility Clear, metallized or foil structures according to the product

Kraft Paper Laminate gives a paper exterior, while the film layers beneath it provide the sealing and barrier performance. A broader comparison of film structures is available on the Mylar Bags page.

03

Closures and Functional Features

Reclosure is one of the main reasons brands choose a stand up pouch, so the closure is usually selected early in the specification.

Feature What It Does
Ziplock Press-to-close track that reseals the pouch after each use
Hook-and-loop zipper Two interlocking fastener strips that reseal when pressed together and pull apart without a track
Child-resistant zipper Uses a controlled opening procedure for qualified child-resistant applications
Tear notch Provides a defined starting point for opening the sealed pouch above the zipper
Hang hole Lets smaller pouches display from retail pegs as well as standing on shelf
Clear window Shows the product while changing the barrier performance of the transparent area
One-way degassing valve Releases gas from freshly roasted coffee; available through Coffee Mylar Bags with Valve
04

Printing and Finishes

The front panel carries most of the visible branding on shelf, with the back panel used for ingredients, directions and barcodes. Digital, flexographic and rotogravure printing are available according to quantity, material and artwork requirements, and full-color CMYK and Pantone spot colors can be combined with matte, gloss, soft-touch, foil stamping, Spot UV and Raised 3D UV where compatible.

For better finished artwork:

  • Keep key copy away from the bottom gusset fold, which curves when the pouch stands.
  • Leave clearance around the zipper track and tear notch.
  • Reserve space around a valve, window or hang hole where used.
  • Place the barcode on a flat area of the back panel for reliable scanning.
05

Recyclable and Compostable Options

Recyclable mono-material and compostable structures can be developed for stand up pouches when the product's barrier, stiffness, printing and sealing needs can still be met.

Option Typical Structure Barrier Direction End-of-Life Route
Recyclable mono-material Mono-PE or mono-PP with compatible barrier layers or coatings Medium to high depending on construction Flexible-film recycling streams where accepted
Industrially compostable Qualified compostable film structures such as PLA/PBAT-based systems Product-dependent Industrial composting facilities
Home compostable Qualified home-compostable film systems Product-dependent Home composting where the selected material is certified for that route

Minimum quantities and supporting certifications depend on the final material and project configuration.

06

Food-Contact Compliance, Testing and Documentation

Food-contact requirements are matched to the actual product, laminate construction and destination market. For U.S. projects, applicable FDA provisions are selected by material, such as 21 CFR 177.1520 for olefin polymer layers or 21 CFR 175.300 for certain coatings. For EU projects, requirements can include Regulation (EU) No 10/2011, Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004 and bisphenol requirements under Regulation (EU) 2024/3190. Child-resistant configurations may require finished-package testing under 16 CFR 1700.20.

Supporting test reports and documentation can be arranged for the selected configuration when required; a report applies to the material or package actually evaluated. Site and program certifications such as ISO 9001, BRCGS, FSC, BPI or TÜV OK Compost may be available through the selected material, manufacturing partner or project configuration where applicable. Food-focused options are covered under Food-Safe Mylar Bags.

07

Filling and Sealing Fit

Share how the pouch will be filled and sealed, whether by hand, with a scoop or on an automated line, so the opening width, gusset, seal areas and zipper placement can be developed around the packing process. Powders and fine particles near the seal area may need extra clearance or a tear-notch position above the zipper.

FAQ

Stand Up Pouch FAQs

Does a stand up pouch stand on its own before filling?

No. An empty stand up pouch stays relatively flat. As the pouch is filled, the bottom gusset opens and forms the base that holds the finished package upright.

What is the minimum order for custom stand up pouches?

The minimum order is 500 units, with larger quantities quoted to the final specification. Minimums for some sustainable or specialty structures depend on the selected material.

How long does stand up pouch production take?

Standard production is 7 days from approved proof once the final specification is confirmed, and rush production is available on request. Specialty materials, testing or complex configurations may need more time.

How much do custom stand up pouches cost?

Pricing starts from $0.55 per unit. The final unit price depends on pouch size, laminate, quantity, printing method, closures, features, finishes and any project-specific testing. Quote requests typically receive a response within 24 hours.

What size stand up pouch do I need for 8 oz or 1 lb?

For whole-bean coffee, a reference 8 oz stand up pouch is about 6 × 9.5 × 3.25 in and a 1 lb pouch about 7.6 × 11.75 × 4 in. Denser products fit more weight in the same pouch, so the size guide compares fill weights by product.

What is the difference between a stand up pouch and a flat bottom bag?

A stand up pouch uses a folding bottom gusset and two main printed faces. A Flat Bottom Bag uses a distinct flat base with two side gussets for a box-like footprint and five printable panels. Stand up pouches are the simpler, more flexible format; the right choice depends on presentation, product and budget.

Can I order a stand up zipper pouch or resealable stand up pouches?

Yes. Ziplock, hook-and-loop zipper and child-resistant zipper options can be added when the product needs reclosure or controlled access. Resealability is optional and depends on the closure selected.

Which bottom gusset style should I choose?

A round (Doyen) bottom generally suits lighter fills and smaller pouches, a K-seal bottom adds base stability for heavier fills, and a plow bottom gives a wider folded base for heavier or bulkier products. The style is confirmed on the dieline with the pouch dimensions.

Can stand up pouches hold liquids?

Stand up pouches on this page are developed for dry and granular products. Liquids, sauces and purees that need pouring are better suited to a Spout Pouch, where the fitment and pouch are developed together.

What materials are available for custom stand up pouches?

Options include PET Film, Clear PET Film, Metallized PET Film, Holographic PET Film and Kraft Paper Laminate, with interior aluminum foil where a higher barrier is needed. The final laminate is chosen around the product and required protection.

Can stand up pouches include a clear window?

Yes, where the selected film and barrier requirements allow it. Window placement is coordinated with the artwork, fill level and seal areas, and the transparent area has a lower barrier than the surrounding film.

Can a stand up pouch include a degassing valve?

Yes, where the application needs one. Freshly roasted coffee is specified through Coffee Mylar Bags with Valve, so the valve type and position are developed with the full pouch specification.

Are stand up pouches food safe?

Food-contact materials are selected around the packed product and destination market, and applicable FDA or EU testing and documentation can be arranged per order for the final construction. Food-focused options are covered under Food-Safe Mylar Bags.

Are stand up pouches recyclable or compostable?

They can be built in recyclable mono-material or compostable structures where the product's barrier and sealing needs can still be met. Recyclability depends on local acceptance of flexible films, and compostability claims depend on the certified material selected.

Can I get a sample before ordering?

Yes. Complimentary sample kits ship within two business days; the customer covers shipping. Pre-production samples can also be produced for approval before the full run.

Where do you ship stand up pouches?

Orders ship across the USA and worldwide. Transit method, delivery time and shipping cost depend on the destination, order volume and shipment requirements.

What artwork file formats can I submit?

The quote form accepts PDF, JPG, PNG, WEBP, TIFF, AI, EPS and PSD files, up to 3 files at 8 MB each, and a custom dieline with free design support is provided for the final pouch.
