Overview & Specifications
What Are Matte Mylar Bags?
Matte Mylar bags are flexible pouches with a low-glare matte exterior and a barrier structure selected separately for the packaged product. The matte appearance describes the outer finish only; it does not by itself define whether the laminate contains aluminum foil, metallized film or another barrier layer.
They are part of the Mylar Bags range and are also sold as matte foil Mylar bags.
What it has to do
What a Matte Finish Has to Do
A matte pouch has to look the way the brand intends, protect the product with the right barrier and print accurately on a low-gloss surface. These are separate choices, so each need below is matched to the specification that meets it.
01
Cut
Cut Glare on the Shelf
The matte surface reduces strong reflections under store lighting, which makes typography, detailed graphics and color blocks easier to read.02
Provide
Provide an Opaque Barrier Where Needed
Metallized PET or an interior aluminum foil layer can be added where the product benefits from opacity and stronger protection against light, moisture, oxygen or aroma. The two have different performance and are specified by product, not treated as interchangeable.03
Make
Make Selected Details Stand Out
The lower-gloss surface lets Spot UV, foil stamping and Raised 3D UV stand out through contrast without making the whole pouch reflective.04
Reproduce
Reproduce Color Accurately
Colors print differently on matte film than they look on screen or on gloss. Artwork is proofed against the selected substrate.
Matte vs Soft-Touch vs Gloss
Matte, soft-touch and gloss are three different surface treatments. Matte cuts glare, soft-touch adds a velvety feel on top of a matte look, and gloss makes colors pop with a reflective shine. The surface choice is separate from the barrier.
| Feature | Matte | Soft-Touch | Gloss |
|---|---|---|---|
| Look | Low glare, flat | Low glare, slightly muted | Reflective shine |
| Feel | Smooth | Velvety | Slick |
| Best for | Readable type, understated branding | Tactile, gift-style presentation | Bright, saturated colors |
| Works with Spot UV contrast | Yes, strong contrast | Yes | Little contrast |
| Affects barrier | No | No | No |
Metallized PET vs Aluminum Foil Layer
Both make a matte pouch opaque, but they are not the same barrier. Metallized PET has a thin vapor-deposited metal layer and gives a good, lighter barrier; an interior aluminum foil layer gives a higher barrier against light, moisture and oxygen. Choose by what the product needs.
| Feature | Metallized PET | Interior Aluminum Foil |
|---|---|---|
| Barrier level | Good | Higher |
| Light blocking | Opaque | Opaque |
| Typical use | Snacks, candy, dry goods | Coffee, oxygen- or light-sensitive products |
| Window compatible | Where the construction allows | Where the construction allows |
Which Pouch Format Fits Your Matte Bag?
The matte finish can be developed on Stand Up, Flat Bottom, 3 Side Seal, Spout and Back Seal pouches. Choose the format by the product and how it is filled and displayed; the finish follows the format.
| Format | Best for with matte | Decision factor |
|---|---|---|
| Stand Up Pouch | Retail snacks, coffee, supplements | Most common matte retail pouch |
| Flat Bottom Bag | Shelf-led larger packs | Five low-glare panels for type-heavy designs |
| 3 Side Seal Pouch | Samples and sachets | Flat format for small fills |
| Spout Pouch | Refills and pourable products | Matte body with a fitment |
| Back Seal Bag | Snack and wholesale packs | Matte pillow packs on form-fill-seal lines |

What Size Matte Mylar Bag Do I Need?
Matte is a finish, so the size comes from the product and the pouch format, not the surface. Use the reference size guide for the chosen format, then confirm with a trial fill.
Format guides: reference sizes by fill weight are on the Stand Up Pouch and Flat Bottom Bag pages.
Print area: type-heavy matte designs may need a larger panel than the fill alone suggests.
Important: Final dimensions depend on the product's density, fill method and headspace, and a trial fill is recommended before the production dieline is approved.
