Overview & Specifications
What Is a Tea Bag Pouch?
A tea bag pouch is an outer retail package that holds several finished tea bags. It is not the filter-paper tea bag itself or the envelope around a single bag. The outer pouch is developed around tea-bag count, bag shape, inner wrapping and the role it plays in freshness protection and presentation.
Tea bag pouches are part of the Mylar Bags range. Loose-leaf tea has different pack-fit needs and is specified separately.
What it has to do
What Tea Bags Need from an Outer Pouch
Tea bags lose aroma and pick up moisture and odors once exposed, and they come in different shapes and counts. The outer pouch has to fit the pack, protect according to the inner wrap, reclose for daily use and carry blend information.
01
Fit
Fit the Count and Shape
The pouch is developed around the physical volume of the tea bags rather than a generic tea weight. Flat and pyramid bags, individual envelopes and different counts need different dimensions and gusset depth.02
Protect
Protect According to the Inner Wrap
When each tea bag already uses a verified barrier envelope, the outer pouch plays more of a secondary protection and presentation role. When tea bags are unwrapped or use limited-barrier wraps, the outer pouch carries more of the moisture, oxygen and aroma protection.03
Keep
Keep Aroma After Opening
Multi-count packs are opened many times. A resealable zipper on compatible Stand Up and Flat Bottom formats helps hold aroma between uses.04
Keep
Keep Out Odors and Moisture
Tea readily takes on surrounding odors and humidity. The outer laminate is selected to limit both, especially for unwrapped bags.05
Communicate
Communicate the Blend
Printed panels organize blend name, flavor, caffeine level, tea-bag count, ingredients and brewing instructions across multiple tea SKUs in a coordinated packaging system.
Wrapped vs Unwrapped Tea Bags: What Changes in the Pouch
Whether the tea bags are individually wrapped decides how much work the outer pouch does. Unwrapped bags rely on the outer pouch for barrier and reclosure; bags in barrier envelopes need less from it, so the pouch can focus on fit and presentation.
| Inner configuration | Role of the outer pouch | Typical outer film |
|---|---|---|
| Unwrapped tea bags | Main moisture, oxygen and aroma barrier | Metallized PET or interior aluminum foil, with zipper |
| Paper-wrapped tea bags | Shared protection; paper wrap adds little barrier | Metallized or foil-lined film |
| Bags in barrier envelopes | Secondary protection and presentation | Wider choice, including clear or kraft-look film |
Which Pouch Format Fits Your Tea Bags?
Stand Up, Flat Bottom, 3 Side Seal and Back Seal pouches can hold finished tea bags. Choose Stand Up for a familiar resealable retail pack, Flat Bottom for a structured shelf profile and higher counts, 3 Side Seal for compact samplers and Back Seal for pillow-style and foodservice packs.
| Format | Best for tea bags | Decision factor |
|---|---|---|
| Stand Up Pouch | Retail multi-count packs | Resealable upright pack |
| Flat Bottom Bag | Larger counts and gift packs | Box-like base and five panels for blend information |
| 3 Side Seal Pouch | Samplers and small counts | Flat compact pack |
| Back Seal Bag | Foodservice and bulk packs | Pillow-style bag for form-fill-seal lines |

What Size Tea Bag Pouch Do I Need?
Size is set by the volume of the tea bags, not the tea's weight: the count, whether the bags are flat or pyramid-shaped, and whether each is in an envelope. Pyramid bags and enveloped bags take noticeably more space than the same count of flat, unwrapped bags.
Count: the number of bags per pouch sets the base volume.
Shape: pyramid bags need more depth and gusset than flat bags.
Inner wrap: individual envelopes add thickness and stiffness to the stack.
Headspace and zipper: leave room above the stack so the zipper can close fully.
Important: There is no fixed size list because tea-bag sizes and wraps vary. Share a sample bag or its dimensions, the count and the wrap, and the pouch is sized around a trial fill before the production dieline is approved.
