Overview & Specifications
What Is a Box Sleeve?
A box sleeve is a printed paperboard wrap with four main panels that forms an open-ended tube around a finished box. It slides on from one end and covers the front, back and both sides, while the box beneath carries the structural load. Brands use it to change graphics, messaging or finishes without redesigning the box itself.
How a Box Sleeve Works
The format works through three production details.
01
Four Panels and a Seam
The sleeve is printed flat, scored into four panels and closed into a tube at a seam set on the dieline.
02
Sized to the Finished Box
Inside dimensions follow the box's outside size, including wrap paper, coatings and tolerances, so the sleeve slides with controlled clearance.
03
Open Ends
Both ends stay open unless the approved dieline adds a feature, so the box slides in and the ends of the box remain visible.
Anatomy of a Box Sleeve
01
Front Panel
Main branding face.
02
Back Panel
Product information, barcodes and copy.
03
Side Panels
Narrow faces for names, variants or messaging.
04
Seam or Glue Flap
Closes the sleeve into a tube.
05
Open Ends
Let the box slide in and out.
Artwork runs around all four panels, so the dieline marks the folds and seam area to keep key graphics and text off them.
Box Sleeve vs Belly Band at a Glance
| Feature | Box Sleeve | Belly Band |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage | All four sides of the box | A narrow band around part of the pack |
| Printable area | Full perimeter | Smaller band area |
| Box visibility | Ends only | Most of the box stays visible |
| Typical role | New exterior for a campaign or SKU | Name, variant or light grouping |
Application guide
When Is a Box Sleeve the Right Choice?
A box sleeve suits brands that want a new exterior on a box they already use: seasonal and limited editions, product families sharing one box size, campaign graphics, and gift or rigid boxes that need a reveal layer, all without a new box run.
01
Add
Add Branding Without Rebuilding the Box
A sleeve gives an existing box a new exterior, so each campaign or product variation needs only new sleeve artwork.02
Create
Create a Controlled Reveal
The customer slides the sleeve off before opening the box, which makes removal part of the opening experience.03
Use
Use the Full Perimeter for Information
Front, back and side panels carry branding, product information, instructions or campaign messaging while the box artwork stays unchanged.04
Alternative
When Another Format May Fit Better
If most of the box should stay visible, a Custom Belly Band covers only a band around it. For a more substantial outer case closed on all but one side, see the Slipcase Box. For beverage cups, use a Cup Sleeve.

What Size Box Sleeve Do You Need?
Quote by the box's finished outside length × width × height, measured over any wrap paper and coatings. The sleeve's inside size follows those numbers plus a small sliding clearance, and the sleeve length along the open direction is set by how much of the box ends should show.
There is no fixed size list: any practical size is built to order, across the full board range below.
How Box Size Becomes Sleeve Size
The figures below are planning references, not fixed manufacturing rules; final allowances depend on the box finish, board and how tight the fit should feel.
| Step | Typical Allowance |
|---|---|
| Box width and height to sleeve inside | Add about 1–2 mm (1/16 in) for a sliding fit |
| Sleeve length | Full box length, or shorter to leave the ends showing |
| Rigid box with wrapped corners | Measure over the wrap at its widest point |
| Several box sizes | One sleeve only where finished sizes are compatible |
Paperboard Caliper Reference
| Board | Typical Thickness | Typically Suited To |
|---|---|---|
| About 14–16 pt | About 0.36–0.41 mm | Light retail cartons and short campaigns |
| About 18–20 pt | About 0.46–0.51 mm | Most retail and gift box sleeves |
| About 22–24 pt | About 0.56–0.61 mm | Larger boxes and frequent handling |
| About 26–28 pt | About 0.66–0.71 mm | Rigid gift boxes and large sets |
| E- or F-flute corrugated | About 0.8–1.6 mm | Large sleeves needing added stiffness |
Important: These are reference figures. Fit depends on the actual finished box, so the sleeve is sized from a sample box or confirmed measurements, and checked on a pre-production sample.
If you are unsure, send a sample box or its finished outside dimensions with the quote request, and the sleeve is sized around it.
Can One Sleeve Fit Several Box Sizes?
Only where the finished dimensions are genuinely compatible. A sleeve sized for one box will slide loose on a smaller one and bind on a larger one, so each box size normally gets its own dieline.
