Overview & Specifications
What Is a Cup Sleeve?
A cup sleeve is an open-ended wrap that slides up a tapered or straight beverage cup and stops at the grip zone. For tapered cups, the sleeve blank is curved to follow the cup profile so it sits evenly at the intended height; straight-sided cups may use different geometry. It adds branding and grip, and separates the hand from the cup wall when the material is suitable.
How a Cup Sleeve Works
The format works through three production details.
01
Cup-Profile Blank
The sleeve is printed and die-cut to the cup's profile; for tapered cups the blank is curved so the top and bottom edges sit level on the cup.
02
Seam into a Ring
The ends are joined at a seam into a ring that ships flat and opens when slid onto the cup.
03
Fit at the Grip Zone
The inside size matches the cup diameter at the sleeve's position, so the sleeve stops where customers naturally hold the cup.
Anatomy of a Cup Sleeve
01
Outer Face
Printed branding area facing the customer.
02
Top and Bottom Edges
Cut to follow the cup's profile.
03
Seam
Joins the ends into a ring.
04
Inner Surface
Plain or textured side against the cup.
On tapered cups the blank is curved, so artwork curves once the sleeve is on the cup; logos and text are placed on the cup-profile dieline, not a flat rectangle.

Application guide
When Is a Cup Sleeve the Right Choice?
A cup sleeve suits beverage programs that want a branded grip area on every cup: coffee shops and hot drinks, cold beverages, cafes and events, and multi-location chains running seasonal or promotional graphics on standard cups.
01
Branded
Branded Hand Contact
The sleeve sits where the customer holds the cup, turning a functional part into a visible brand surface.02
Added
Added Grip
Board texture, surface finish and sleeve shape can improve handling compared with a smooth cup wall.03
Material-Based
Material-Based Thermal Separation
A sleeve can reduce direct hand contact with a hot or cold cup. Actual insulation depends on stock thickness, construction, cup temperature and use conditions, so no universal rating applies.04
Alternative
When Another Format May Fit Better
To brand a box rather than a cup, a Box Sleeve wraps all four sides. For a light band around a product or bundle, see the Custom Belly Band.
Cup Sleeve Specifications

What Size Cup Sleeve Do You Need?
Quote by your cup's top and bottom diameter and the height where the sleeve should sit, or send a sample cup. Cup profiles differ between suppliers even at the same ounce size, so the sleeve is drawn around your actual cup rather than a generic size.
There is no fixed size list: any practical size is built to order, across the full material range below.
How Cup Size Becomes Sleeve Size
The figures below are planning references, not fixed manufacturing rules; final allowances depend on the cup, material and how high the sleeve should sit.
| Step | Typical Allowance |
|---|---|
| Diameter at the sleeve's top and bottom edge | Measure on the cup at the intended position |
| Sleeve height | Often about 2–3 in (50–75 mm), set by the grip zone |
| Taper or profile | Sets the blank shape on the dieline |
| Several cup sizes | One sleeve only where profiles genuinely match |
Material Reference
| Material | Typical Thickness | Typically Suited To |
|---|---|---|
| About 14–18 pt paperboard | About 0.36–0.46 mm | Cold drinks and light grip sleeves |
| About 20–24 pt paperboard or kraft | About 0.51–0.61 mm | Hot drinks and everyday coffee service |
| E- or F-flute corrugated | About 0.8–1.6 mm | Hot drinks needing more hand separation |
Important: These are reference figures. Thermal separation and fit depend on the stock, construction, cup and beverage temperature, so the sleeve is checked on your cup with a pre-production sample.
If you are unsure, send a sample cup or its supplier and size with the quote request, and the sleeve is drawn around it.
Hot, Cold or Both?
Tell us the beverage use before the dieline is drawn. Hot drinks favor thicker board or corrugated for hand separation, while cold drinks need a stock and finish chosen with condensation in mind.
