Overview & Specifications
What Are Hang Tab Boxes?
Hang tab boxes are folding cartons with a tab that extends above the top panel and carries a die-cut slot or hole for a peg hook. The tab is part of the same blank as the carton, so the hanger and the printed package are one piece. Packaging Dock builds them on the Straight Tuck End carton.
They are part of the Tuck Boxes range and Packaging Dock's Retail Packaging.

What a Hanging Carton Has to Get Right
A hanging carton has to fit the fixture, carry the packed weight from one point, face forward, keep the tab clear of the closure and fit the peg wall's spacing. Each need below is matched to the option that meets it.

Why Hang Tab Boxes Use Straight Tuck End
Hang tab boxes use Straight Tuck End construction because both tucks hinge from the same panel, so the front panel stays consistent from tab to base while the box hangs. Other tuck structures can carry a hang tab on request:
| Structure | Hang Tab | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Straight Tuck End | Standard | Used on this page |
| Reverse Tuck | On request | Opposite tucks change which panel faces forward |
| Auto Lock | On request | Pre-glued bottom for heavier contents |
| Snap Lock | On request | Hand-locked bottom |
| Seal End | On request | Glued ends, closed until opened |
Integrated Hang Tab vs Adhesive Hanger
An integrated hang tab is cut as part of the carton; an adhesive hanger is a separate tab stuck onto a finished box. The integrated tab removes the extra part and the step of applying it.
| Attribute | Integrated Hang Tab | Adhesive Hanger |
|---|---|---|
| Part of the carton blank | Yes | No, added later |
| Extra packing step | None | Apply the hanger |
| Printed with the box | Yes | Usually plain |
| Failure point | Tab strength, slot geometry and packed load | Adhesive bond, tab strength and packed load |
| Board usage | Slightly larger blank | Standard blank |

How Do You Size a Hang Tab Box?
Size the carton from the product, then add the tab and slot for the fixture. The carton allowances are the same as any Straight Tuck End carton; the tab adds height above the top panel. The Straight Tuck End sizing guide lists carton allowances.
| Slot Type | Shape | Typically Chosen When |
|---|---|---|
| Euro (delta) slot | Wide slot with a raised center | Standard retail peg hooks, lets the carton lift off easily |
| Round hole | Circular hole | Single-prong pegs and pegboard hooks |
| Measurement | What to Record |
|---|---|
| Product | Length, width, depth and packed weight |
| Fixture | Actual hook type, wire diameter and length from the retailer or fixture supplier |
| Tab | Height above the top panel and slot position |
| Depth on hook | Carton depth, to plan units per hook |
Hang the Packed Sample
Hang a filled sample on the actual hook and leave it loaded. Check that the tab does not tear or bend forward and that the front panel faces straight.
What to Check Before Bulk Production
Hang a packed sample on the intended fixture. Record the approved board, tab height and slot shape on the signed-off sample.
| If the sample shows | Review before approval |
|---|---|
| Tab bends or tilts forward | Raise the board grade or shorten the tab |
| Slot does not fit the hook | Re-cut the slot to the hook |
| Carton swings sideways | Review slot position against the loaded carton's balance |
| Front panel hidden on the hook | Check the tab position on the dieline |
Seven days covers standard production from approved proof once the specification is confirmed; delivery timing is confirmed separately.
