Overview & Specifications
What Is an Auto Lock Gable Box?
An auto lock gable box is a folding paperboard carry carton supplied flat with a pre-glued bottom. When the carton is opened, the bottom panels swing into their locked position, and after filling, the sloped upper panels meet to form the gable top and its built-in handle. The handle is part of the carton, not a separate attachment.
How the Auto Lock Gable Box Works
The format works through three production details.
01
Pre-Glued Bottom Panels
The bottom panels are glued to each other at set points during production, while the carton is still flat.
02
Base Forms on Opening
As the carton is erected, the glued panels are pulled into a locked base, so the packer does not interlock the bottom by hand. The carton still has to be opened and squared before filling.
03
Gable Top and Handle
The sloped top panels close over the product and meet at the handle panels, where a die-cut hand opening forms the carrying grip.
Anatomy of an Auto Lock Gable Box
01
Auto-Lock Base
Pre-glued panels that lock as the carton opens.
02
Body Panels
Front, back and side print surfaces.
03
Gable Roof Panels
Sloped top panels that close over the contents.
04
Handle Panels
Meet at the top with a die-cut hand opening.
05
Closing Tabs
Hold the top closed, per approved dieline.
06
Side Seam
Glued in production.
The broad side panels and gable roof carry most of the branding. Keep heavy decoration clear of folds, glue zones and the handle opening, where the board flexes as the box is carried.
Auto Lock Gable vs Interlock Gable at a Glance
| Feature | Auto Lock Gable | Interlock Gable |
|---|---|---|
| Base made | Pre-glued in production | Folded by the packer |
| Base setup | Locks as the carton opens | Panels folded and engaged in sequence |
| Glue at packing | None | None |
| Typical packing | Many boxes set up per shift | Hand assembly where a pre-glued base isn't needed |
Application guide
When Is an Auto Lock Gable Box the Right Choice?
An auto lock gable box suits carry-out orders packed repeatedly by hand, where setting up each base adds time across a day: bakery and takeaway counters, gift and favor assortments, candy packs, and event or catering kits prepared in volume.
01
Faster
Faster Repetitive Setup
The base forms as the carton opens, so counter or fulfillment staff skip the bottom folding steps on every box.02
Carry-Ready
Carry-Ready Presentation
The handle lets the packed box go straight from the counter to the customer's hand, without a separate paper bag for suitable products.03
Defined
Defined Base Once Erected
Because the bottom is glued in production, each box forms the same base geometry; final suitability depends on board, size and packed weight.04
Alternative
When Another Format May Fit Better
Where a pre-glued base isn't needed and boxes are assembled by hand, an Interlock Gable Box engages its bottom panels manually. For a base sealed with a peel-and-seal strip, see the Seal End Gable Box. If no handle is needed, an Auto Lock Box gives the same type of base under a tuck top.

How Auto Lock Gable Compares to Other Gable Box Structures
| Attribute | Auto Lock Gable | Interlock Gable | Seal End Gable |
|---|---|---|---|
| Base | Pre-glued, locks on opening | Panels folded and engaged by hand | Panels sealed with a peel-and-seal strip |
| Base steps at packing | Open and square | Fold in sequence | Fold, peel cover, press |
| Adhesive at the base | Pre-glued in production | None | Peel-and-seal strip, applied in production |
| Top | Gable handle | Gable handle | Gable handle |
| Best fit | Repeated packing, fewer base steps | Hand assembly, no pre-glue | Sealed base without glue equipment |
What Size Auto Lock Gable Box Do You Need?
Quote by inside base length × width × body height, where length and width are the base footprint and body height runs from the base to where the gable roof begins. The roof and handle add height above that, set by the box width and handle design on the dieline. Length and width also set the auto bottom panels, so very shallow or unusual footprints are checked on the dieline.
There is no fixed size list: any practical size is built to order, across the full board range below.
How Product Size Becomes Box Size
The figures below are planning references, not fixed manufacturing rules; final allowances depend on product shape, insert and board.
| Step | Typical Allowance |
|---|---|
| Product to inside length and width | Add about 2–3 mm (1/8 in) for easy filling |
| Product to body height | Add about 3–5 mm so contents sit below the roof fold |
| With an insert or tray | Size to the insert's outer dimensions |
| Stacked or multiple items | Size to the packed layout, not a single item |
Paperboard Caliper Reference
| Board | Typical Thickness | Typically Suited To |
|---|---|---|
| About 14–16 pt | About 0.36–0.41 mm | Small favors and samples |
| About 18–20 pt | About 0.46–0.51 mm | Wrapped candy and light gifts |
| About 22–24 pt | About 0.56–0.61 mm | Bakery orders and gift sets |
| About 26–28 pt | About 0.66–0.71 mm | Larger boxes and fuller packs |
| E- or F-flute corrugated | About 0.8–1.6 mm | Added stiffness at larger sizes |
| B-flute corrugated | About 3 mm | Large catering and multi-item boxes |
Important: These are reference figures. The handle's carrying capacity depends on board, handle geometry, dimensions and packed weight, so no weight rating is published without testing the finished box.
If you are unsure, share the product dimensions and packed weight with the quote request, and the box is sized around them.
How Much Setup Does the Auto Base Save?
It removes the bottom folding steps from every box; the exact time depends on box size and the packing routine. The saving adds up across a busy counter or fulfillment shift, and a packing trial on the sample shows the real difference.
