Overview & Specifications
What Are Food Gable Boxes?
Food gable boxes are gable cartons used for food orders: a handled box that closes into a peaked top and carries packed meals, boxed lunches or snack kits from the counter. The food sits in its own container, in an inner pack, or directly on board specified for contact. The handle replaces a separate carry bag for suitable contained orders.
Food Gable Boxes sit in the Gable Boxes range, on Auto Lock, Interlock or Seal End bases, and under Food & Beverage Packaging. Bakery orders are on Bakery Gable Boxes and candy assortments on Candy Gable Boxes.
What it has to do
What Food Needs from a Gable Box
Food in a gable box needs a carton sized to its containers, a base matched to the packed weight, an interior that keeps items apart, surfaces suited to the food and a handle that carries the load. Each need below is matched to the option that meets it.
01
Carton
A Carton Sized to the Containers
Meals sit in containers, lunches in compartments and snacks in inner packs. The inside size follows those parts, not the food weight alone.02
Base
A Base Matched to the Load
Auto Lock locks as the carton opens, Interlock folds by hand and Seal End seals with a peel strip. The base is chosen by packing speed and packed weight.03
Interior
An Interior That Keeps Items Apart
Containers, cups and snack packs move during carrying. Dividers, trays and inner packs hold each item in place.04
Surfaces
Surfaces Suited to the Food
Grease, moisture and direct contact affect the board and coating. Food-contact board is available on request. The board, coatings, inks, adhesives and any liner, insert or window film are confirmed for the food type, contact time and temperature, including possible migration.05
Handle
A Handle That Carries the Load
Handle comfort depends on board, carton width and packed weight. For heavier orders, Reinforced Handle Gable Boxes can be reviewed as an option; the handle is confirmed on a loaded carry sample for the chosen size, base and packed weight.
Which Food Fits Which Gable Box Setup?
Each food order sets the interior, the contact surfaces and the best base. The table matches common orders to a starting setup.
| Food | Interior | Contact surfaces | Base to review first |
|---|---|---|---|
| Takeout meals | Dividers for containers or cups | Food sits in its own container; carton is outer packaging | Auto Lock or Seal End for heavier loads |
| Boxed lunches | Compartments or dividers | Food-contact board or liner where food touches the carton | Auto Lock for busy counters |
| Snack kits | Divider or insert | Wrapped items touch only their wrapper; components still checked | Any base, by packing speed |

What Size Food Gable Box Do I Need?
Size the box from what goes inside it: the containers, compartments or inner packs, arranged as they will be packed. Final allowances for the handle and closure are set on the approved dieline.
| Measurement | What to Record |
|---|---|
| Contents | Containers, cups or inner packs, with dimensions |
| Layout | Rows, count and any dividers |
| Height | Tallest item, including lids |
| Weight | Packed weight of the full order |
Pack and Carry a Sample
Fill a sample with a full order, close the gable and carry it by the handle. Check that containers stay upright and the top closes without pressing on the lids.
What to Check Before Bulk Production
Review a sample packed with the real food and printed with the final artwork. Record the approved interior, contact surfaces and base on the signed-off sample. Where a sample shows a problem, review the cause, revise the specification and confirm it on another packed sample.
| If the sample shows | Cause to review |
|---|---|
| Lids touch the top | Carton height against the tallest container |
| Containers slide during carrying | Divider or insert layout |
| Grease marks the board | Coating or liner against the food, contact time and temperature |
| Handle strains under the full order | Board, dimensions, reinforcement and load distribution |
Seven days covers standard production from approved proof once the specification is confirmed; delivery timing is confirmed separately.
