Overview & Specifications
What Are Custom Candle Boxes?
Custom candle boxes are retail folding cartons for candles: a printed paperboard box with a tuck top and a locked base, sized to one candle. The carton presents the candle on the shelf and carries the scent name and care copy; it is not a shipping box.
They are part of the Tuck Boxes range and Packaging Dock's Candle Packaging.
What it has to do
What a Candle Needs from Its Box
A candle needs a carton cut to the real vessel and lid, a base that carries glass weight, a hold that keeps the jar from rattling, room for burn and warning copy, and a choice between showing the candle or hiding it. Each need below is matched to the option that meets it.
01
A
A Carton Cut to the Vessel, Not the Oz Label
Jars sold at the same size differ in shape: an 8 oz jelly jar is about 3.75 in high and 2.5 in across, while an 8 oz tureen jar is about 2.5 in high and 3.82 in across. The inside size comes from the filled vessel with its lid.02
A
A Base That Carries the Weight
A filled glass jar is heavy for a folding carton, so these cartons use an Auto Lock or Snap Lock locked bottom instead of a tucked end. Base suitability depends on filled weight, board, dimensions and assembly; confirm on a packed sample.03
A
A Hold That Stops Rattling
A jar that moves scuffs its label and chips. A paperboard, foam/EVA or molded pulp insert keeps the vessel centered.04
Room
Room for Burn and Warning Copy
ASTM F2058-07(2021) covers fire-safety labeling for candle units of sale. The brand decides the warning content and where it sits; the carton carries the copy the brand supplies.05
Show
Show the Candle or Keep It Hidden
A die-cut window shows the wax color or vessel; a full carton keeps the candle enclosed until opening. See Window Packaging Boxes.
Which Locked-Bottom Structure Fits a Candle Box
Auto Lock and Snap Lock are the two carton structures used for candle boxes. Both have a locked base; they differ in how the base is set up.
| Structure | How the Base Forms | Choose When |
|---|---|---|
| Auto Lock | Pre-glued base opens into place | Larger runs where packing speed matters |
| Snap Lock | Base flaps folded and locked by hand | No pre-gluing needed, smaller runs |

What Size Candle Box Do I Need?
Measure the filled vessel with its lid at its widest and tallest points, then add a fit allowance or size to the insert. Tapers and pillars are measured by length and diameter. The Auto Lock sizing guide lists carton allowances.
| Candle | What to Record |
|---|---|
| Jar or tin | Height with lid, widest diameter, filled weight |
| Pillar | Diameter and height |
| Taper | Length and base diameter, single or pair |
| Votive | Diameter, height and count per box |
Check With the Filled Vessel
Pack a filled jar with its lid and any insert and close the carton. Handle the packed carton as intended and check the base, closure and insert.
What to Check Before Bulk Production
Review a packed sample with the filled vessel and final artwork. Record the approved size, base and insert on the signed-off sample.
| If the sample shows | Review before approval |
|---|---|
| Jar moves inside | Add or tighten the insert |
| Base flexes under the jar | Raise the board grade |
| Warning copy crowded | Move it to a larger side or back panel |
| Lid catches when packing | Re-measure height with the lid |
Seven days covers standard production from approved proof once the specification is confirmed; delivery timing is confirmed separately.
