Overview & Specifications
What Is a Shoulder Neck Rigid Box?
A shoulder neck rigid box is a three-part setup box: a rigid base, a removable rigid lid and a rigid inner neck fixed inside the base that stands above its walls. The top edge of the base forms the shoulder. When the box closes, the lid slides over the neck and rests on that shoulder, with or without a visible band of neck between the two.
How the Neck, Shoulder and Lid Work
The format works through three parts stacked into one profile.
01
Rigid Base
The base holds the product. Its top edge stops below the neck and becomes the shoulder the lid lands on.

02
Inner Neck
A separate wrapped board collar is set inside the base walls and projects above them. It forms the inner wall the product sits within and the guide the lid slides down.

03
Removable Lid
The lid is sized around the finished neck and closes toward the shoulder, so the outer lid and base walls align according to the chosen proportions. The neck guides the lid down as it closes.

Anatomy of a Shoulder Neck Rigid Box
-
01
Lid
Top panel and lid walls; lands on the shoulder when closed.

-
02
Neck
Inner collar; can be wrapped to match or contrast and carry a printed band.

-
03
Shoulder
Top edge of the base where the lid rests.

-
04
Base
Outer lower walls and floor; holds the neck and any insert.

-
05
Insert
Optional fitted insert inside the neck.

Treat the visible neck as its own print panel. Its color, finish and any wording should be planned together with the lid and base so the band reads as one deliberate line around the box.
Visible or Concealed Neck
Whether the neck shows is the main styling decision on this structure.
| Neck Style | How It Sits When Closed | Typically Suited To |
|---|---|---|
| Visible neck | Lid stops above the shoulder, leaving a band of neck exposed | Contrast color line, layered gift and fragrance presentation |
| Concealed neck | Lid lands on the shoulder and hides the neck | Seamless closed exterior with a hidden inner reveal |
Application guide
When Is a Shoulder Neck Rigid Box the Right Choice?
A shoulder neck rigid box suits products where the lid should seat precisely and the opening should feel layered, such as fragrance bottles, jewelry, keepsake gifts and boxed food or drink gift sets. Compared with a two piece box, the third wrapped component and extra fit coordination can affect material use, assembly and final pricing.

01
Guided
Guided, Flush Lid Seating
The neck steers the lid into place, and the lid walls can close flush with the base walls for a single continuous exterior. -
02
A
A Third Branding Surface
The neck can carry a contrasting wrap, foil band or printed line that is only fully seen as the lid lifts. -
03
Clean
Clean Inner Wall Around the Product
Products sit inside the neck, so the wall seen when the box is open is a finished collar rather than the cut base edge. -
04
Alternative
When Another Format May Fit Better
When a third component is not needed, a Two Piece Rigid Box gives the same lift-off opening at lower cost. For an attached lid, see the Flip Top Rigid Box, or the Hinged Rigid Box for compact jewelry cases. A Custom Drawer Box suits a sliding reveal, and a Collapsible Rigid Box ships flat when storage volume matters.

How Shoulder Neck Boxes Compare to Other Rigid Box Structures
The shoulder neck box is the only one of these formats with a third rigid layer between lid and base.
| Attribute | Shoulder Neck Rigid Box | Two Piece Rigid Box | Flip Top Rigid Box | Hinged Rigid Box |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Parts | Lid + neck + base | Lid + base | Base + lid on a paper-wrapped spine | Base + lid on a defined hinge mechanism |
| Lid action | Lifts off, guided down over the neck | Lifts off, slides over the base | Lifts from the front, stays attached | Swings open, stays attached |
| Closed profile | Lid and base flush, optional neck band | Lid overlaps base; partial lids show a base band | Single unit with front closure area | Compact single unit |
| Components to fit | Three | Two | Two, joined by a spine | Two, joined by a hinge |
| Best fit | Layered reveal, precise lid seating | Full-access gift and retail boxes | Inside-lid message, front-opening reveal | Compact, insert-centered products |
What Size Shoulder Neck Rigid Box Do You Need?
Size the neck from the product outward, then build the base around the neck and the lid over it. Because the product sits inside the neck, the neck interior is the true product space; the base and lid are both sized from the neck's outer walls.
How Neck, Base and Lid Sizes Relate
The figures below are planning references, not fixed manufacturing rules; final allowances depend on product shape, insert, board, wrap and finish.
| Step | Typical Allowance |
|---|---|
| Product to neck interior (no insert) | Add about 2–3 mm to length and width, 2–5 mm to height |
| Neck walls | Add one board thickness plus wrap on each side of the neck |
| Base around the neck | Base interior matches the neck exterior; base walls then add board and wrap again |
| Neck height above the shoulder (concealed) | About equal to the inside depth of the lid |
| Neck height above the shoulder (visible) | Inside lid depth plus the width of the band you want exposed |
Typical Board Selection Starting Points
| Box Size (longest side) | Typical Board |
|---|---|
| Up to about 150 mm (6 in) | About 1.5–2.0 mm |
| About 150–250 mm (6–10 in) | About 2.5 mm |
| Over about 250 mm (10 in), or contents over about 1 kg | About 3.0 mm |
Important: Every component adds its own tolerance, and a shoulder neck box stacks three of them. With rigid boxes typically held to about ±1–2 mm overall, the neck-to-lid fit and the band width are checked on a sample before the run.
If you are unsure, share the product dimensions and weight with the quote request, and the neck, base and lid are sized around them.
Why Does a Shoulder Neck Box Look Larger Than Its Contents?
Two layers of wall surround the product on every side, the neck and the base, before the lid adds a third at the top section. A box that holds the same product as a two piece box therefore measures slightly larger outside, which matters when the box goes into a shipper or retail shelf with fixed dimensions.
